How To: Make Mashed Potatoes

When I first started learning to cook I remember thinking people just needed to break things down a little more for me.  I asked a friend one day how she made alfredo sauce and she said, "I add some cream, some butter, a little bit of Parmesan..."

How much is 'some'?  A 'little bit'?  I didn't know, so I asked her...  "Oh, ya know," she said, "just enough."

Grr!

How can I make it if I don't know if we are talking a little bit as in a half a teaspoon or a little bit as in a half of a cup???

I know I am not alone in this.  And so, I am breaking things down here.  Today I will share my favorite side dish ever -- mashed potatoes.

You can really use any kind of potato, but the cheapest/most common kind is Russet potatoes...

(And by 'a little bit' I mean about a Tablespoon ;)  )

COST: $1.80   Cost per serving (4): $0.45

  1. Thank you so much for this! I never know what they mean by 'a little bit' either haha. This break down makes it easy.

    1. You are very welcome! I started this blog after I had the basics of cooking down, but I was thinking the other day how there are so many 'basics' that nobody ever shares on a blog because they are just that -- basic. So, I am attempting to share my experience with these every once in awhile for people like us -- those that can't just go with 'a little bit' :)

  4. This is too funny. My mom is a great cook, but not much of a teacher! She would say a little bit of this... But then I'd say "what if I put too much?" she 'd tell me to add more of something else to balance it out. I guess she is just good at cooking without a recipe. She hates measuring things before cooking.

But it's great that you're doing posts like this . .. I need things to be broken down for me when it comes to cooking! Have a great Labor Day!

    1. I know! I think all moms are like that, but in my opinion, Brazilian moms are more so!!! When I know how to cook something well (like mashed potatoes) I don't measure, but I thought there has got to be someone out there like, so it is time to measure ;)

I will do more like this because learning is easy if you know what to do!
